Advent: PEACE comes from the Four Winds

Lucy and Orlando Taveras

Scriptures: Isaiah 64:1-9; Psalms 80:1-7; 1 Corinthians 1:3-9; Mark 13:24-37

Focus Scripture: Isaiah 64:1-9

Question for reflection: If someone told you that you would see God face to face, what would you do to prepare?

In response to the question posed to us, luckily we know that one day we will see God face to face, although that day is unknown. While we wait for the day when we will get to see our creator face to face, we all confront the challenge of preparing for that blessed day. It is a challenge because of the battle between the spirit and the flesh. On a daily basis we all sin and must make conscious of doing our duty in everything God requires of us. The bible tells us exactly what we need to do in preparation.

In Isaiah 64, we read about a prophet who is no longer a young man but an old man who has returned with his people from exile. Isaiah has a prayer of lament; the prophet pleading with God on behalf of his people. We notice that the prophet seems to be going through depression and mood swings as he pleads with God. Many of us were raised with the notion that we can only go in prayer to God in a certain mindset but God wants us to have an honest communication with him, a relationship with him, during both our good times and our bad times. We should not refrain from hiding our true feelings because God knows our heart.

The truth is that we are not in a constant joyful state. Many of us suffer from depression and the cause of that depression varies. During the times when we feel we are at our lowest, we can go to God and by faith take a hold of the promises God has made while remembering that we are not saved by our good deeds but by God’s favor and mercy.

Our preparation to meet the Creator should be constant. Constant preparation requires consciousness of doing our duty in everything and through that deliberate action, we will find peace. Philippians 4:6-7 states: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God and the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” God will provide that peace beyond all understanding that cannot be measured. On that blessed day when we finally get to see God, there will be no fear, no depression, no anxiousness, only peace that will be eternal.

Prayer: God, we thank you on this day for showing us your peace. May we always come to you in prayer regardless of the state of mind we are in, knowing that you are merciful and the one who grants peace.

THANK YOU – GRACIAS

We live in a time of passwords. In a time where we need to remember the necessary private codes to enter our car, our house, our phone, our tablet, our computer, our money. For many this is new, but not for God!   Since the beginning of time God can be access with the same code, one known by every one. This code is public and does not require multiple letters and special symbols. His code its simple and we will never forget it: “THANK YOU.” My brothers and sisters this simple code not only gives us permission to enter but also give us access to make ourselves at home, talking praise. Thanking him. Worshiping him. For God is sheer beauty, all-generous in love, loyal always and ever. (Psalm 100:4-5 MSG)

Day 12: Freedom to Serve – Libertad para Servir

1 Peter (Pedro) 2:15-16

GW: God wants you to silence the ignorance of foolish people by doing what is right. Live as free people, but don’t hide behind your freedom when you do evil. Instead, use your freedom to serve God.

Oh, what a wise advised! Freedom is sinonimous of SERVICE! You want to be free? Be a good citizen, treat others with respect and dignity, love, do what is right (JUSTICE). Listen this is not only require inside the church building! Exercise your freedom servicing God and others; this way you will silence the ignorance of many. Thank You for your FREEDOM TO SERVE!

Day 7: What has God given you? – Que Dios te ha dado?

Santiago 1:17

(TLA) Dios nunca cambia.

Nosotr@s siempre estamos pidiendole algo a Dios.

(GW) Every good present and every perfect gift comes from above, from the Father who made the sun, moon, and stars. The Father doesn’t change like the shifting shadows produced by the sun and the moon.

We are always asking God to give us something. Have you ever reflect in those things that He has given is, “just because”? I have given Him my heart and He has given me “every desirable and beneficial gift”, at the end of the day, all comes out of love.

DAY 11: I want what I want – Quiero lo que quiero!

1 Juan 2:16; Filipenses 4:19

1 John 2:16; Philippians 4:19

Some time ago, a client told me that he was having a hard time and was stressed out due to the lack of so many things. She was thinking about his family, the upcoming Holidays and his lack of money. When I asked what she needed her reply surprised me: “I need new furniture for my apartment, I need money to buy presents for my family, I need new clothes and a brand new bedroom set.” We have been socialized to want so many things! We want it all, want, want, and want. And I thought, is all that we want in life that important to survive? Is all we want bring us closer to God? How important its to obtain those things we believe are essential for our life? A car, a new house, new furniture!

One thing I am sure, God knows what I need and will take care of me in exceeding generosity! Read what Matthew 6:31-34 says “If God gives such attention to the appearance of wildflowers—most of which are never even seen—don’t you think he’ll attend to you, take pride in you, do his best for you? What I’m trying to do here is to get you to relax, to not be so preoccupied with getting, so you can respond to God’s giving. People who don’t know God and the way he works fuss over these things, but you know both God and how he works. Steep your life in God-reality, God-initiative, God-provisions. Don’t worry about missing out. You’ll find all your everyday human concerns will be met. “Give your entire attention to what God is doing right now, and don’t get worked up about what may or may not happen tomorrow. God will help you deal with whatever hard things come up when the time comes.

Thank You Provider for not letting me get all that I want, and for giving me the opportunity to have that what I really need; Your blessings, your gifts, eternity!

Gratitude not grATTITUDE! Day 10

MSG: “Whenever this happens, my heart stops— I’m stunned, I can’t catch my breath. Listen to it! Listen to his thunder, the rolling, rumbling thunder of his voice. He lets loose his lightning from horizon to horizon, lightning p the earth from pole to pole. In their wake, the thunder echoes his voice, powerful and majestic. He lets out all the stops, he holds nothing back. No one can mistake that voice— His word thundering so wondrously, his mighty acts staggering our understanding. He orders the snow, ‘Blanket the earth!’ and the rain, ‘Soak the whole countryside!’ No one can escape the weather—it’s there. And no one can escape from God. Wild animals take shelter, crawling into their dens, when blizzards roar out of the north and freezing rain crusts the land. It’s God’s breath that forms the ice it’s God’s breath that turns lakes and rivers solid. And yes, it’s God who fills clouds with rainwater and hurls lightning from them every which way. He puts them through their paces—first this way, then that— commands them to do what he says all over the world. Whether for discipline or grace or extravagant love, he makes sure they make their mark.

“Thunders and lightning! Natures talk to us about God’s power. When I was growing up I was told that God would kill me with lightning. I remember a dark day, full of noise and then lightning…every light in our house exploded, the clothes drying in the line burned… I run, escaping that horrible moment.. But I was alive, that day fear and terror became my friends. Even today as an adult, every time I hear thunder I know lightning will follow and I hide because of fear, terror and panic, thinking deep inside of me “God is going to kill me”. This morning as I read this word I discovered that “when God allows us to hear thunder and see lightning, powerful things happen” ALELUYAH! God is talking to us, he disciplines us, he shows us his grace or his extravagant love! Thank You Beloved for your love, love that sounds like thunders and lightning!

Gratitude not grATTITUDE Day 6

Psalm 34

“The Lord hears our cry and listens to our hearts. He is real and still alive. I remember that we prayed and he answered our prayers. We prayed for healing and healed those oppressed, those that had no voice are being listened to, and those that were invisible are seen by our God! Thank You for your faithfulness.”

GW: I will thank the Lord at all times.
  My mouth will always praise him. My soul will boast about the Lord.
    Those who are oppressed will hear it and rejoice. Praise the Lord’s greatness with me.
    Let us highly honor his name together. I went to the Lord for help.
    He answered me and rescued me from all my fears. All who look to him will be radiant.    Their faces will never be covered with shame. Here is a poor man who called out.
    The Lord heard him and saved him from all his troubles. The Messenger of the Lord camps around those who fear him,
    and he rescues them. Taste and see that the Lord is good.
    Blessed is the person who takes refuge in him. Fear the Lord, you holy people who belong to him.
    Those who fear him are never in need. Young lions go hungry and may starve,
    but those who seek the Lord’s help have all the good things they need. Come, children, listen to me.
    I will teach you the fear of the Lord. Which of you wants a full life?
    Who would like to live long enough to enjoy good things? Keep your tongue from saying evil things
    and your lips from speaking deceitful things. Turn away from evil, and do good.
    Seek peace, and pursue it! The Lord’s eyes are on righteous people.
    His ears hear their cry for help. The Lord confronts those who do evil
    in order to wipe out all memory of them from the earth. Righteous people cry out.
    The Lord hears and rescues them from all their troubles. The Lord is near to those whose hearts are humble.
    He saves those whose spirits are crushed. The righteous person has many troubles,
    but the Lord rescues him from all of them. The Lord guards all of his bones.
    Not one of them is broken. Evil will kill wicked people,
    and those who hate righteous people will be condemned. The Lord protects the souls of his servants.
    All who take refuge in him will never be condemned.

¡Únanse a mí,
y juntos alabemos
la grandeza de Dios! Le pedí a Dios que me ayudara,
y su respuesta fue positiva:
¡me libró del miedo que tenía! Los que a él acuden
se llenan de alegría
y jamás pasan vergüenzas. Yo, que nada valgo,
llamé a Dios, y él me oyó,
y me salvó de todas mis angustias. Dios envía a su ángel
para que salve del peligro
a todos los que lo honran. Dios bendice
a los que en él confían.
Ustedes, pueblo de Dios,
vengan y prueben su bondad;
verán que a quienes lo adoran
nunca les falta nada.
Los ricos pasarán hambre,
pero a los que confían en Dios
nunca les faltará nada bueno. Vengan conmigo, queridos niños;
¡préstenme atención!
Voy a enseñarles a honrar a Dios.
y de andar diciendo mentiras;

y no sufrirán daño alguno. Los malvados tendrán que sufrir
las consecuencias de su maldad,
pues Dios habrá de castigar
a los que odian a su pueblo. Dios siempre salva a los suyos;
los que confían en él
no sufrirán ningún castigo.

Gratitude not grATTITUDE Day 5

How many things we have said about God! He is marvelous, He is Awesome, He is the reason I praise and worship. Today I give thanks for another day full of expectations and opportunities to grow and to move on.

Gratitude not grATTITUDE – Day 4

Salmo 23

We know that God is our shepherd; our provider, our leader, and our guide among many other things. But do we really accept the fact that he renew us, gives us courage, protect us, and the best of all, He takes the time to anoint our heads with oil of trust? It seems to me that he gives us a royal treatment! Thank You for your mercy and your joy!

GW: The Lord is my shepherd.
  I am never in need. He makes me lie down in green pastures.
 He leads me beside peaceful waters. He renews my soul. He guides me along the paths of righteousness
for the sake of his name. Even though I walk through the dark valley of death,
 because you are with me, I fear no harm.
Your rod and your staff give me courage.You prepare a banquet for me while my enemies watch.
 You anoint my head with oil.
My cup overflows. Certainly, goodness and mercy will stay close to me all the days of my life,
and I will remain in the Lord’s house for days without end.

TLA: Tú, Dios mío, eres mi pastor;
contigo nada me falta. Me haces descansar en verdes pastos,
y para calmar mi sed
me llevas a tranquilas aguas. Me das nuevas fuerzas
y me guías por el mejor camino,
porque así eres tú. Puedo cruzar lugares peligrosos
y no tener miedo de nada,
porque tú eres mi pastor
y siempre estás a mi lado;
me guías por el buen camino
y me llenas de confianza. Aunque se enojen mis enemigos,
tú me ofreces un banquete
y me llenas de felicidad;
¡me das un trato especial! Estoy completamente seguro
de que tu bondad y tu amor
me acompañarán mientras yo viva,
y de que para siempre
viviré donde tú vives.

Gratitude not grATTITUDE – Day 3

Psalm 100

God is a God of happiness, of Joy, of Song. He is faithful to his people. His mercy endures forever! Thanks for being so good!

GW: Shout happily to the Lord, all the earth. Serve the Lord cheerfully.
    Come into his presence with a joyful song. Realize that the Lord alone is God.
    He made us, and we are his.[a]
    We are his people and the sheep in his care. Enter his gates with a song of thanksgiving.
    Come into his courtyards with a song of praise.
    Give thanks to him; praise his name. The Lord is good.
    His mercy endures forever.
    His faithfulness endures throughout every generation.

¡Viva Dios! ¡Adórenlo con alegría!
¡Vengan a su templo
lanzando gritos de felicidad! Reconozcan que él es Dios;
él nos hizo, y somos suyos.
Nosotros somos su pueblo:
¡él es nuestro pastor,
y nosotros somos su rebaño! Vengan a las puertas de su templo;
¡denle gracias y alábenlo! Él es un Dios bueno;
su amor es siempre el mismo,
y su fidelidad jamás cambia.
