We try to make our classes both visually and mentally engaging. One lesson that sticks in my mind as having been particularly fulfilling to plan and teach was the story of creation told in layers, over the course of eight weeks. Let me first explain that, though we have a set curriculum, each teacher/instructor/mentor puts together his/her lesson plan according to their own gifts of the spirit.
That means that each individual can teach the same lesson in very different ways. During this particular time period, I was the only person available to teach the class for a two month period of time. This was a one-room “school house” featuring ages 4 to 16!
How do you come up with a lesson plan for the story of creation that will get all these ages actively engaged with the story, the characters, and GOD…? You pray. You read. You pray. You think. You pray…
And then it occurred to me, that this was a room of amazingly creative kids that would get a kick out of “changing” their world. So, what followed was 7 weeks spent talking, thinking, praying and transforming our classroom walls into The Garden of Eden.
Each session entailed a commitment from each of us to stick only to that “day’s” creation.
Day 1: Let there be Light
- We talked about the difference between light and dark, fear and joy.
- We talked about how those differences made us feel and what we could do in times of fear.
- And we drew.
Day 2: Separated the Waters above from the waters below
- We talked about the difference between rain showers and rivers, heavy downpours and ponds, snow and lakes, storms and seas, hail and oceans, torrential storms and beaches.
- We talked about how those differences made us feel and what we could do to enjoy the weather.
- And we drew.
Day 3: Created Land, Sea, and Plants
- We talked about the difference between land and sea, and spent time talking about plants, flowers and vegetation.
- We talked about how those differences made us feel and what we could do to enjoy natures bounty (including eating healthier).
- And drew.
Day 4: Created Sun, Moon and Stars
- We returned to our Day 1 conversation about the difference between light and dark, fear and joy and to it we added night and day!
- And drew.
Day 5: Created the Creatures of the Sea and Birds of the Air
- We talked about the fishes and birds that might have been.
- We talked about imaginary creatures and mermaids and phoenixes!
- And drew.
Day 6: Created Beasts and Cattle
- We talked about beasts and cattle, wild animals and tamed, we talked about clean and unclean animals and we talked about dinosaurs and lions and tigers and bears!
- We also talked about the creation of humankind and the bountiful provisions that the plants and trees provided!
- And drew.
Day 7: He Rested!
- We talked about rest. And self-care. And praise.
- And reasons to be thankful and grateful.
- And drew.
And on the 8th Sunday:
- When they had all lived the story, we walked into a dark room free of chairs and tables, sat on the floor in a circle and finally heard the entire “known story” of Creation.
Genesis 1 and 2: 1-4: The Account of Creation (NLT)
Then God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. [we turned on dim lamps] And God saw that the light was good. Then he separated the light from the darkness. God called the light “day” and the darkness “night.” And evening passed and morning came, marking the first day.
Then God said, “Let there be a space between the waters, to separate the waters of the heavens from the waters of the earth.” And that is what happened. [an invited guest walked into the classroom and sprayed us with a light mist] God made this space to separate the waters of the earth from the waters of the heavens. God called the space “sky.” And evening passed and morning came, marking the second day.
Then God said, “Let the waters beneath the sky flow together into one place, so dry ground may appear.” And that is what happened. [the guest pulled a blanket from the ceiling revealing strands of silver foil hanging from the ceiling] God called the dry ground “land” and the waters “seas.” And God saw that it was good. [an invited guest rolled brown paper and taped it to the walls of the classroom; while another guest unrolled blue paper with the children’s drawings of sea creatures attached] Then God said, “Let the land sprout with vegetation—every sort of seed-bearing plant, and trees that grow seed-bearing fruit. These seeds will then produce the kinds of plants and trees from which they came.” And that is what happened. [at this point I started attaching the different trees and plants to the “land”] The land produced vegetation—all sorts of seed-bearing plants, and trees with seed-bearing fruit. Their seeds produced plants and trees of the same kind. And God saw that it was good. And evening passed and morning came, marking the third day.
Then God said, “Let lights appear in the sky to separate the day from the night. Let them mark off the seasons, days, and years. Let these lights in the sky shine down on the earth.” And that is what happened. God made two great lights—the larger one to govern the day, and the smaller one to govern the night. He also made the stars. God set these lights in the sky to light the earth, to govern the day and night, and to separate the light from the darkness. [by now all the kids wanted to help attach stars to the ceilings and walls] And God saw that it was good. And evening passed and morning came, marking the fourth day.
Then God said, “Let the waters swarm with fish and other life. Let the skies be filled with birds of every kind.” So God created great sea creatures and every living thing that scurries and swarms in the water, and every sort of bird—each producing offspring of the same kind. [we attached the big sea creatures and the animals that swim and all kinds of birds] And God saw that it was good. Then God blessed them, saying, “Be fruitful and multiply. Let the fish fill the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.” And evening passed and morning came, marking the fifth day.
Then God said, “Let the earth produce every sort of animal, each producing offspring of the same kind—livestock, small animals that scurry along the ground, and wild animals.” And that is what happened. [we attached all the tame and untamed animals] God made all sorts of wild animals, livestock, and small animals, each able to produce offspring of the same kind. And God saw that it was good.
God said, “Let us make human beings in our image, to be like us. They will reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, the livestock, all the wild animals on the earth, and the small animals that scurry along the ground.” So God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. [we finally attached 1 man and 1 woman to our walls] Then God blessed them and said, “Be fruitful and multiply. Fill the earth and govern it. Reign over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and all the animals that scurry along the ground.” Then God said, “Look! I have given you every seed-bearing plant throughout the earth and all the fruit trees for your food. And I have given every green plant as food for all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, and the small animals that scurry along the ground—everything that has life.” And that is what happened. Then God looked over all he had made, and he saw that it was very good! And evening passed and morning came, marking the sixth day.
So the creation of the heavens and the earth and everything in them was completed. On the seventh day God had finished his work of creation, so he rested from all his work. And God blessed the seventh day and declared it holy, because it was the day when he rested from all his work of creation. This is the account of the creation of the heavens and the earth.
